It's all about holding it for the long term, which works the same way for stocks. At least with real estate it gives you a place to live. Can't beat yourself up about what someone told you in '84. It's never too late!

About every decade we see a bubble, and I have never had the money to invest in real estate. I remember being sent to a dayplanning seminar many years ago, and the instructor told us that real estate was always the best investment, potentially. I should have listened to him in 1984!

It's a shame that certain people over 55 feel that condo living is exclusive. Seniors are presented with more living choices than anyone (home care, senior centres, long term care facilities, etc) Fact of the matter, if you want to invest in property and don't have time to manage "facilities", then condo purhcases make sense- no matter your age.

Great article! While I rarely treat my clients to a full blown meal, on showing days I always break for lunch. It gives my clients a chance to go and chat about what they have seen, alone, without the 'pressure' of simply having me there. I make sure to leave them with homework for that time. ("Now go and put together a 'short list' from what we have seen. Be brutal, leave the list with the best 2-3.") While they dine and work out their choices, I retreat to the office to 'down a Power Bar', answer phone calls, and search out answers to questions that cropped up during the showings.
It has worked well, shows my clients that I honor their decision making process, and helps me stay current with the other business that always piles up on showing days.
Thanks for the article. Thank you for being another agent who truly CARES about your clients! You make our industry a better place!

I agree that a lot of agents don't listen. In my case, my last agent shouldn't have because I thought I wanted something completely different than I bought. I think a great agent needs to listen and do a lot of probing-especially if they're new to the area.

This is AWESOME! I like how realistic, fair and kind you are about the REALITIES of getting into the real estate market right now. We are right back where we should be...buying a house to be our H-O-M-E.
Love your blog!

Lisa, could you please provide a post in the future regarding what to look for in a real estate agent? I don't know what we should expect (legally and ethically) from an agent.
